Alabama Legal Resources

Alabama Appleseed is a small nonprofit organization that focuses primarily on research and policy work. We provide legal assistance in only a small number of cases each year specifically involving individuals serving life without parole sentences under Alabama’s Habitual Felony Offender Act for offenses involving no physical injury. We are also investigating cases involving criminalized survivors, individuals whose incarceration is connected to victimization, primarily survivors of domestic violence. 

Alabama Appleseed is unable to represent clients with wrongful convictions at this time.

• The Jefferson County District Attorney’s office has a Conviction Review Unit for convictions occurring in Jefferson County-Birmingham Division. For more information, please click here.

• The Bessemer District Attorney’s office has established a Conviction Integrity Unit for convictions occurring within the Bessemer Division of Jefferson County. For more information, please click here.

Alabama Appleseed is rarely able to represent individuals at parole hearings. However, we occasionally represent individuals serving life sentences or other extreme sentences.

Redemption Earned is an Alabama nonprofit that represents select aged and infirm individuals in parole proceedings. For more information about Redemption Earned’s services, please click here.

Alabama Appleseed is appalled at the violent and dangerous conditions in Alabama’s unconstitutional prisons. Please note that Appleseed does not currently provide legal services in this area and is unable to assist in situations inside the prisons.
