At Alabama Appleseed we don’t just talk about Alabama’s problems, we solve them. Our policy, advocacy, and legal work over the past year has generated undeniable progress towards building a better Alabama and we are celebrating! We want to thank you as your support has been instrumental. We’re excited to share with you our 2023 Justice Report highlighting our growth and impact this year including:
- Securing a win in the Alabama Legislature with the passage of SB154, ending Alabama’s practice of automatically suspending people’s driver’s license for missing a payment or court hearing. This will make life easier for more than 170,000 Alabamians who have had their licenses suspended for debt-based reasons.
- Publishing two new original reports. After talking with over 400 impacted people across the state about their experiences after violence occurs, we released the report Afterward. And our newest report Taken for a Ride shows how excessive ticketing propels Alabama drivers into a cycle of debt, incarceration, and poverty.
- Supporting 15 clients who we’ve succeeded in gaining release through resentencing efforts. These men served a combined 476 years in prison for offenses with no physical injuries. Our Fresh Start re-entry program ensures that they feel supported, empowered, and confident.
None of this work would be possible without your support. Thank you for standing with us!
